Heard
the new Jessica Simpson single. Later, a friend asked if I was outraged at
yet another carpetbagger showing up in town, declaring country music
citizenship and ready to partake of country's rewards. No, I said, I
wasn't. For a lot of reasons. Her song sounds like a utilitarian voice
recording a heavily-produced, factory-written generic song, with carefully
crafted steel and acoustic guitars, with almost too much of both, as if to
point and say, "Listen to me -- I'm country! I could be the next
Shania." At least there's no banjo. Interesting that some radio
stations are complaining that Simpson's single sounds too poppy. It
actually sounds more country than say Rascal Flatts' or Carrie Underwood's
current singles. Perhaps it just sounds as if it's trying too hard to be
country with its aggressive instrumental approach. CLICK

Simpson is the latest to join what's getting to be quite a little parade
of former divas, poppers, hip-hoppers and rockers to go Country, including
Bon Jovi, Eddie Money, Jewel, Darius Rucker, Peter Frampton and Emerson,
Lake and Palmer. Admittedly I am not a fan of 'post Idol,' pop fan, and
can't tell the difference between Ashlee or Leona or Jordin or Rihanna. In
fact, I have to admit that I didn't even know what Ms. Simpson's 'pop'
stuff sounded like- Kelly and Mary Lynne both said it's kind of 'breathy.'
So, at least I came in with no pre-conceptions- I mean I had been hearing
from Rector for months that the song is a smash, but you know how that
goes. If I were to stack up the 'stiffs' that he got me to play while I
was in radio you could probably build yourself a nice little house. But
guess what- he was right- it's a flat out 'smash.' Written by Jessica and
Rachel Proctor, this is my favorite single of the year . The hooks are
huge, it's up-tempo and Jessica nails it. So, put away those biases and
play this thing loud. By the way, to my knowledge Peter Frampton and ELP
have not gone Country yet.

Jessica Simpson Accepted by Country Radio
Looks like new country singer Jessica Simpson will have no problem at all rising to the top of the country charts. On day two of her new single's release, "Come on Over" has already surpassed the one million mark in audience and the song is taking off in country radio surprisingly well. In fact, it's doing better than country veteran Kellie Pickler's new single "Don't You Know You're Beautiful". If Jessica's single continues rising at this pace, it will be the most added song to country radio next week and will look forward to an easy high debut on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for the next issue. Congrats to Jessica.

27) to country radio and was spun 21 times on Broadcast Data
Systems-monitored stations. Against acoustic guitar strums and a driving
rhythm, the track finds Simpson pleading with a love interest to drop

Her romance with Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo may have overshadowed her singing career of late, but Jessica Simpson is back with a new single, the first off her upcoming country album. The lighthearted, upbeat "Come On Over," airing on Jacksonville, Fla. radio station WQIK, features her breathy vocals over a steel guitar. On the tune, she sings: "I need you now/ I need you bad/I need you baby looking just like that/Don't pack a bag/Don't make me wait/ I want to kiss that smile that's on your face/I need you wrapped up in these arms/ I want you just the way you are/Come on over." Early feedback has been positive: in a poll on WQIK's Web site, of the more than 6,600 people who listened to the track, 58 percent gave it a thumbs up. Simpson's record label says that she will be performing at fairs and festivals this summer in support of her country album, due out in September. Simpson's father told PEOPLE last year that the album will go back to her Texas roots. "She's a singer from top to bottom," Joe Simpson said. "And everything in the music business, especially pop music, has moved away from singers. And I think country is the only pure, storytelling kind of genre left."

Breakup rumors be darned: On Saturday, Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo looked every bit the happy couple at N9NE Steakhouse in Dallas. "They were holding hands, in a good mood and happy," a source tells PEOPLE. "They looked like they were on a date together." The public display of affection was in keeping with the couple's last high profile date – Simpson's sister Ashlee's wedding, where they were "kissing and holding hands throughout the night." It appears Jessica Simpson and Tony Romo have smoothed out their rough patch. After a brief split, the pair reunited in Dallas for Memorial Day weekend. Simpson and Romo shared a corner booth at N9Ne steakhouse on Saturday night according to Alan Peppard of the Dallas Morning News - the columnist who was first to report on the couple's split. According to Peppard the pair noshed on steak (for him) and a burger (for her) - and stopped to say hello to another diner with a baby girl on their way out. On Sunday, Simpson and Romo took in brunch at Sneaky Pete's in Lewisville, Texas, PerezHilton reported. Simpson sported a Dallas Cowboys cap while leaving Cabo San Lucas on Thursday. The singer had been vacationing with her parents, (sans Romo) since her sister tied the knot on May 17.

Jessica Simpson hopped off her flight from Mexico and jumped right back to work. The pop star, who returned to Los Angeles yesterday after spending a few days unwinding (from what, we wonder) with her family south of the border, apparently isn't in the mood for more R&R. She was on the move today, making a quick stop at a Marriott hotel in Sherman Oaks and then holing up in a West Hollywood recording studio. A source close to the songstress told E! News that Simpson planned to spend six to eight hours at the studio working on material for a "country crossover" album. Sounds about right for a little lady who's been suspiciously without her Cowboy for a while.

Jared Leto’s rep has blasted a report in the National Enquirer that claimed Jessica Simpson cheated on beau Tony Romo with his client. “There is no truth whatsoever to the article,” Leto’s manager Jason Weinberg tells Us Weekly magazine.
